The Parthenon Marbles

By Wetry, July 1, 2009 8:50 pm

The British newspaper the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/poll/2009/jun/24/elgin-marbles has just finished a poll asking what People think about the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. The results of the poll are 94.8% in favor of returning and 5.2% voting No. The official results will be published by the Guardian on July 8, 09.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin_Marbles we copy a short history of the events. Please note the timing, just a few years before the final revolution that led to the end of 400 years occupation by the Turks.

Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin, the British ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1799–1803, had obtained a controversial permission from the Ottoman authorities to remove pieces from the Acropolis. From 1801 to 1812 Elgin’s agents removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon, as well as architectural members and sculpture from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. In Britain, the acquisition of the collection was supported by artists and others, while some critics compared Elgin’s actions to vandalism or looting. Following a public debate in Parliament and subsequent exoneration of Elgin’s actions, the marbles were purchased by the British Government in 1816 and placed on display in the British Museum, where they stand now on view in the purpose-built Duveen Gallery. The legality of the removal has been questioned and the debate continues as to whether the Marbles should remain in the British Museum or be returned to Athens.

I received today a short note from a very good friend of Mine, Alecos, who cannot hide his anger and puts it in very few words that I share with him, as I am sure every single Greek around the Globe does.
Here is what we Greeks say:

At last let it be the dream of Melina Merkouri a reality and let the b.. British return the Marbles that were cut to small pieces in order to be transported, by the butcher, the ignorant, the barbarian and at the same time mega-thief, but unfortunately referred to as “lord???”, from the great – but recently small Britannia.

Please vote, our poll will last for a long time!!!

  1. Time has come for British Government and the British Museum to prove that they are part of the civilized world, by returning the Marbles where they belong.

  2. Please remember when the British lord took away the Parthenon statues, Greece was under barbaric Turkish occupation.

At the Acropolis museum inauguration , 2 parties did not show- up
The BUYERS and the SELLERS !!
Perhaps , both parties had a feeling of shame ?

  3. Eugenia Sakka says:

I would like the marbles to be returned to Greece where they belong.

  4. This was a crime by Elgin (just as the Ottoman occupation was) and the British government has to now do the right thing and return the marbles. I think they will in the end, but it may take a long time. British imperial history is full of exploitation, murder and the occupation of other lands. They are probably afraid if they return the marbles, other countries will do the same…they should be ashamed of this part of their history…I think the new Acropolis museum will become the magnet for the marbles return to their homeland. I plan to visit the museum in August. I understand there are displays left vacant in anticipation of the returning marbles.

In the mean time you may visit my other site which is in Greek http://zhteitai-komma.com/wldps/?page_id=584, or vote again here and comment in English or Fragoxiotika.

  9. D.SPILIOTOPOULOS says:

The word RETURNIG alone gives the stigma of something having violently been stolen. How would English people feel, if part or all of Big Ben had been stolen in the name of English been unable of keeping it in safe.

Like most Blogs these pages will have a very few Pages and many Categories as well as Sub_Categories, that will slowly be created. Without registration all are free to post a Comment on any particular article. To post a comment (reply) go to the bottom of the article where you will find a box with a heading “Leave a Reply”. If it is not there look for the link “Comments”, usually located near the top right hand of the article and click on it. The “Leave a Reply” box should now be open. Also please read: http://yourfree-blog.com/YourBlog/?p=1

If you wish to login as a user and create your own new articles (under the existing Categories or in a new Category that you will request) then read article: http://yourfree-blog.com/YourBlog/?p=7

Comments and New Articles must be approved by administration before published, so it may take a day or a bit more until you see your entry in your computer. Make sure you hit the refresh button in your browser.

Keep in mind that like in most blogs newer articles are always shown on the top, so if you are searching for an older article you may have to move to the bottom of the page (or do a search). Also all new category articles have a short start-up guide on what this section includes. Please go to the bottom of each new category or sub-category you open (press ctrl+end) and read this short article before posting (usually 2 or 3 lines).

Pages, are linked below the header picture together with a link to Home (homepage). Pages are also linked near the top of the right hand column.

Blogroll, listed below Pages are useful links to WordPress sites, to learn more about Blogs and even start your own Free Blog hosted at WordPress (this Blog here is independently hosted but I can assure you there is no difference). To get a new FREE WordPress Blog go to http://wordpress.com/.

Gategories, listed below the Blogroll and include Sub-Categories. Depending on your monitor resolution and size, as well as, the number of Categories created (by us) you may need to use the vertical cursor to view all categories (and sub)

Tagcloud, include words inserted as tags with new articles created and they will help search engines to find specific articles. Words in larger fond indicate more than one article with that specific word or sentence.

Archives, will be slowly (and automatically) be generated to include all articles of a specific month.

Meta, has links to Register, Login (if you are already registered), logout, a link to WordPress site and a few other links that we will learn together, as we go along.

Calendar, at the very bottom, a little widget with the month we are going through.

In the next few weeks, as content slowly increases, we will add one new page as a simple sitemap to make it easier to find the various sections and maybe even articles in this Blog. Please visit back this page in a few weeks and check for a new Page link.

We also have some basic rules (more will be added as we go along – the degree of human sickness is infinite):

We are flexible up to a limit with the contents of this Blog. Below is a short list of things that will not be tolerated and may result to a total ban of your email and IP from our site and possibly even further actions including notification to the authorities:

We have zero tolerance on the use of Children for any purpose, from simple advertising up the sexual exploitation.

We have zero tolerance on the promotion or advertising of drugs and even legally obtained variety (such as sex enhancements, athletic related enhancements etc)

We have zero tolerance on hard porno pictures. We do not object to sex between consenting adults, but porno pictures are to be kept private.

  1. Stacy says:

Sometimes u need to be strict with children, but that doesnt mean you should hit them. Being strict and hitting children are two different things. What hitting does is makes the child more stubborn. Many a times, we hit a child not coz of his fault but coz we are frustrated about something else in our life. That is very unfair. Would we have liked something similar to be done to us when we were a child? Even if we have gone through it in our childhood, it does not give us any reason to do the same to the little budding flowers. Keep calm, give them love and they will be just fine and listen to you even more.
